Day 1. Palermo: Ballaro Market. Palermo Cathedral. Marina."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first morning in Sicily started slow. We slept in without tracking time. It was nice not to have any plans and enjoy the time, the open balcony, sounds coming from the street, slow shower.<\/p>\n<p>Our affittacamere had four units. Three of them were vacant. If you\u2019re reading these notes, mark your calendar \u2014 March seems to be a good time to visit Sicily: beautiful weather and easy accommodations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2855.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2855.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2855\" width=\"600\" height=\"727\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hidden modernity among the ancient cobblestones. These boxes, each with a unique code, were there to leave the unit keys and eliminate the fear of losing them or having them stolen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_3051.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_3051.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 3051\" width=\"600\" height=\"727\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a long and slow staircase from our room to the street. We first encountered it in the dark on the way up and it felt endless and mysterious. Not as endless on the way down in the morning but still mysterious and beautiful.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Palermo Staircase\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1078436305?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Oblivious to the time, at the center of almost empty Vucciria I felt rested and excited that my day was just beginning. Honestly, even now I have no idea what time it was when we got outside. Maybe Tom looked at the clock but he did not tell me anything.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2858.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliawithagoodappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2858.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2858\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is now I realize that street vendors on Piazza Caracciolo were wrapping up for the morning. For me then, it felt like they were just setting up and it was exciting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2859.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliawithagoodappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2859.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2859\" width=\"600\" height=\"749\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>First things first \u2014\u00a0breakfast. Epic Sicilian spleen sandwich Pani c\u00e2 M\u00e8usa introduced by Jewish street vendors a thousand years ago. For this sandwich, the offal was boiled and served with lemon and salt. Truly when the ingredients are good there\u2019s no need to doctor them with spices.<\/p>\n<p>At about the same time, Sicilian Arab population was enjoying bread with ricotta and caciocavallo cheese.<\/p>\n<p>These two street food traditions morphed into a sandwich served in Palermo to this day. Boiled spleen, lung, and trachea are fried in pork lard and served on vastedda, a soft bun studded with sesame seeds.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2861.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliawithagoodappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2861.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2861\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are two kinds of Pani c\u00e2 M\u00e8usa: maritatu, or married, offal with cheese and schettu, single, just offal alone. We got schettu probably because it was late in the morning \u2014 was it really still morning? not sure \u2014 and our vendor was out of cheese.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2862.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliawithagoodappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2862.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2862\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If back then I knew that it would be the most memorable meal of our trip, we would have definitely ordered a large one. But always expecting to try more and saving space we got a small one. The vendor shook his head in disapproval and right he was.<\/p>\n<p>Frying in lard gives the meat the most incredible softness and that final touch of salt and lemon juice just bursts the flavors in the mouth. The sandwich is filling but, honestly, you\u2019d want this memory of flavors and textures to linger.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2863.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliawithagoodappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2863.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2863\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Crossing Via Roma. Tiny Italian cars and motorcycles. Just like in Taipei a couple of years ago, they are the reminder of how we take space for granted in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2866.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliawithagoodappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2866.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2866\" width=\"600\" height=\"771\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A stop at Sant\u2019Antonio Abate, a 13th century Roman Catholic church built in Baroque traditions. The church used to be part of the wall defending the city but, later, reconstructed many times to give ways to new streets and changing city landscape.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2867.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2867.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2867\" width=\"600\" height=\"823\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I would probably consider myself a Northerner by birth and upbringing. Oranges rolling on the ground just like that will forever fascinate me.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2869.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2869.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2869\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Saint Anthony church is adjacent to the Vucciria market and we got a good view of our sandwich vendor and whatever was left from the morning activities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2871.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliawithagoodappetite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2871.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2871\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back onto Corso Vittorio Emanuele, past the Church of Saint Catherine. Now in daylight.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2872.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2872.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2872\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back to Quattro Canti, The Four Corners, at the intersection of Corso Vittorio Emanuele with Via Maqueda where four historic quarters of Palermo collide.<\/p>\n<p>North West corner has the fountain representing summer at the ground level, King Philip II above it, and Santa Ninfa, a patron saint, at the top and Seralcadi Quarter behind it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2873.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2873.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2873\" width=\"600\" height=\"604\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the base of the North East corner that represents Castellamare Quarter, there is an autumn fountain, Philip III above it. Then \u2014 Olivia di Palermo at the third level.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2874.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2874.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2874\" width=\"600\" height=\"633\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>South East corner is winter with Philip IV and Sant\u2019Agata in front of the Kalsa District.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2875.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2875.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2875\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The last, South West, corner is spring with Charles V and Christina in front of Albergheria Quarter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2877.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2877.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2877\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We continued along Corso Vittorio Emanuele towards our possible lunch destination.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2878.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2878.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2878\" width=\"600\" height=\"668\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we walked along, little adjacent streets spilling into the main street were a constant attraction to my camera and I kept snapping the pictures just for the mood of them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2879.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2879.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2879\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Piazza Bologni, the oldest square in Palermo with the statue of Charles V in the middle surrounded by historic buildings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2880.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2880.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2880\" width=\"600\" height=\"610\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Piazza Bologni, we got off the main street and moved south, towards the Ballar\u00f2 Market.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2883.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2883.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2883\" width=\"600\" height=\"811\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cobblestones are pretty hard on your joints and require constant attention as they are quite uneven and some of them could be missing or broken.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2884.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2884.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2884\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Constantly looking the camera lens, I would be long lost in the maze of these little streets. Thankfully, Tom is always alert and watching a map on his phone.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2885.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2885.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2885\" width=\"600\" height=\"685\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s Via Ballaro, the road to our lunch.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2886.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2886.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2886\" width=\"600\" height=\"687\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Ballaro Market is named after the nearly village Bahlara, where most of its Arabic merchants reside and where the goods come from. This is the largest outdoor market in Palermo. Some references say it might be a thousand or more years old. Instead of coming here early in the morning as all the travel guides advise, we came really late and the crowds were already quite thin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2887.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2887.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2887\" width=\"600\" height=\"628\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Last night this area looked quite different \u2014 dark with silent shadows lurking around; it didn\u2019t even feel safe. Today was a different story. Even though we got here in the afternoon with trade winding down, the place was lively and traders actively pulling you in to buy what they offered.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2888.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2888.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2888\" width=\"600\" height=\"716\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Someone said that to feel a country or a city, you need to visit a railway station, a cemetery, and a market. Not sure about the first two \u2014 sometimes, but the last one is definitely my favorite go to place.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign markets are simple and wondrous at the same time. Like this counter: sliced grilled vegetables. How much more simple can it be? But then how often do we get to experience vegetables grown in a real soil under the sun, cooked with locally grown herbs. Terroir factor makes simple things unique.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2893.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2893.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2893\" width=\"600\" height=\"767\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our walk through this market was definitely a highlight of our stay in Palermo. Although in the afternoon, we still got to experience the colors, the smells, the screams and music of this place.<\/p>\n<p>My first encounter with salted capers piled on a tray and in such a quantity. I paused here for a while as all the possibilities were floating through my mind.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2894.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2894.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2894\" width=\"600\" height=\"609\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Graffiti, the hassle of the market and stunning Chiesa del Carmine Maggiore, The Church of Carmine Maggiore, in the background. Its origins go back to the 13th century when Carmelite friars started to arrive in Palermo from Mount Carmel. What makes this church stand out from the others in Palermo is this colorful dome decorated with maiolica tiles  supported by the  statues of Atlanteans.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2895.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2895.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2895\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Moving along the market lanes, absorbing the contrasts of the architectural beauty with the realities of the everyday necessities. Quite picturesque, in its own way, a meat counter of Ballaro. For a carnivore like myself, It is a beautiful sight.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2896.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2896.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2896\" width=\"600\" height=\"660\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These beautiful but unkempt sides streets reminded me of Moscow during the wild 90s \u2014 same history in the need of so much TLC.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2897.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2897.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2897\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Chiesa del Carmine Maggiore dome a little bit closer. That\u2019s how you roll in Palermo \u2014 between exquisite beautiful history and not much taken care of current modern reality.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2898.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2898.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2898\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Proceeding further into Ballaro Market \u2014 colorful and forever attractive piles of seafood. <br \/>This is when the reality of time started to sink in for me \u2014obviously someone was here before and cleaned up a good amount of shrimp and oysters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2899.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2899.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2899\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Passing by the Aperol stand, I looked at my watch. Shocking! Until this moment I did not realize how far into the day we were. It was already 4 PM. Jet lag is jet lag. On the bright side \u2014 we can have a drink breakfast without guilt.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2900.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2900.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2900\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Polpette di sardine e carciofi marinati. That was our lunch. After a trip to China, language barrier in Italy was barely noticeable. Same alphabet, familiar words. And someone who has read a few Italian cookbooks feels here even more comfortable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2905.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2905.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2905\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Activity around our counter has been already folding but while Tom was ordering our drinks I found a chair. One of the merchants noticed that and, boy, he created a fuss around us. People started bringing tables and chairs back, wiping them. Tom felt extremely uncomfortable that he was noticed and being served. Honestly, it seemed that these people genuinely enjoyed extra action, company, and just living the life.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2908.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2908.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2908\" width=\"600\" height=\"695\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We sat there for a while gearing up for another walk and watching the clean up. How organized this seeing mess actually was \u2014 everyone knew and did their part, everything had its place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2909.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2909.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2909\" width=\"600\" height=\"556\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All cleaned up. As Tom\u2019s dad used to say: Julia is a very good eater, very good appetite. It is what it is.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2910.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2910.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2910\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rejuvenated by a snack, some beer, and a glass of Aperol spritz, we walked around Chiesa del Carmine Maggiore.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2911.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2911.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2911\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trade around the market was seriously winding down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2912.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2912.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2912\" width=\"600\" height=\"665\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the base of the church, locals have already been gathering for the afternoon winding down and drinks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2916.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2916.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2916\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some streets were already completely empty just like they were the night before when we wandered here in the dark.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2913.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2913.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2913\" width=\"600\" height=\"759\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We moved along Via Giovanni Grasso towards the dome of Chisea di San Francesco Saverio, a Jesuit house built at the turn of the 17th century.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2915.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2915.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2915\" width=\"600\" height=\"860\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This church has been a house of worship, a seminary, a military hospital. These days it is a popular wedding venue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2918.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2918.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2918\" width=\"600\" height=\"807\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is just now looking at these pictures I am trying to recreate our wanderings around Palermo. Tom was the guide. We both were glued to the phones. Some of the urban street art works relate to the city\u2019s history, some cover mafia. You can even go on special graffiti tours to catch the work of some top international artists.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2922.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2922.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2922\" width=\"600\" height=\"692\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we walked, on every street here and there was an opening offering drinks and snacks. Nothing fancy \u2014 a couple of tables outside or just stools \u2014 where one can land for a panini, some beer, or Aperol.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2923.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2923.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2923\" width=\"600\" height=\"738\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Vicolo Conte Cagliostro. Legend has it that in this alley once known as Via della Perciata in the 18th century lived a notorious impostor Giuseppe Balsamo, known as Count Alessandro Cagliostro. A self proclaimed healer, magician, and psychic, he traveled all over Europe cashing in and gathering some serious wealth pulling noses of the rich people with his \u201csupernatural powers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He even made a trip to Russia, where he tried to sell a fraudulent formula of love to Russian nobility but almost got caught.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the Soviet Union, a movie director Mark Zakharov made a musical comedy based on the Alexei Tolsoy\u2019s novella <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yCYNWTxp6II\">\u201cFormula of Love.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0The story was about the trip when Count Cagliostro, on the run from Saint Petersburg nobility, in the middle of nowhere Russia, tried to bring to life a statue which one young provincial aristocrat happened to fall in love with. The movie was wildly popular for its actors and music. In my wildest dreams, I could never have imagined that I would be standing on the street where the Count was born and lived.<\/p>\n<p>That black oval once held a metal image of the Count but it was dismantled and stolen. They say thieves used a ladder to take it down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2925.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2925.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2925\" width=\"600\" height=\"872\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Moving closer to the center of the city and seeing more Aperol, fruits, and Pani c\u00e2 M\u00e8usa carts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2926.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2926-1.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2926\" width=\"600\" height=\"733\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Traditional Sicilian handcrafted jewelry, of course \u2014 bobbin lace, silver, crochet, pottery, tatting. Temptations on every step of the way.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2927.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2927.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2927\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Winding through the graffiti covered walls of Palermo, Tom was working our way towards Palermo Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2928.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2928.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2928\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Via Matteo Sclafani, named after a powerful baron known to build multiple palaces and cathedrals in Italy, and Palermo in particular.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2929.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2929.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2929\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Via Scafani flowed over into Vivolo di Brugn\u00f2, a narrow alley, which is a must visit in July during the Feast of Santa Rosalia, Palermo\u2019s patron saint.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, in July, in this tiny alley, its residents create an altar with a statue of Santa Rosalia. For about ten days during the Feast, the walls of this street transform covered with lights, photographs, paintings, sacred relics \u2014 different each year.<\/p>\n<p>There is even a legend how this Festival started after one day, about sixty years ago, a resident of this street was hospitalized with a serious illness. Incredible recovery of that resident is attributed to the prayers addressed to the Santuzza Rozalia. In gratitude, that resident once released from the hospital bought a large statue of the saint and donated it to the alley. Every year, in July, the statue is taken outside for a display and the alley becomes a place of pilgrimage to Italians and tourists alike.<\/p>\n<p>This alley is so tiny and so well protected from any influence of modernity that it created a feeling that you\u2019re almost entering someone\u2019s home with clotheslines across distinctly present.<\/p>\n<p>Older women standing the the archways of the street obviously were a tight knit tiny community and they gave us the once over, recognizing strangers. Wish I knew the language. No, wish I could stand there for a few more minutes to feel that time from the years gone by so carefully preserved in this tiny alley.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2930.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2930.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2930\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And here it is \u2014 Cattedrale Di Palermo \u2014 the symbol of the city. This Roman Catholic church stands on land that has been a place of worship since the 4th century, including a mosque that was here during the Arab times.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2933.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2933.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2933\" width=\"600\" height=\"779\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The official name of the cathedral is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Over 700 years, the cathedral constantly underwent changes \u2014 alterations, explanations \u2014 and it appears to combine features \u2014 Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, German \u2014 of whoever was in charge at the moment.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2935.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2935.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2935\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Right in front of the cathedral there is a statue of Santa Rosalia, or how she is lovingly referred to by locals, Santuzza, the little saint. She is the patron saint of Palermo. That creature at the bottom of Rosalia&#8217;s feet symbolizes defeated plague.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2936.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2936.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2936\" width=\"600\" height=\"721\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Catalonian gothic arches are entrance to the cathedral.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_2938.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2938.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 2938\" width=\"600\" height=\"638\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The cathedral was built on the site of a mosque and it was supposed to surpass the magnificence of its main rival, the cathedral of Monreale. If you raise your head and look at the dome above the relics of Santa Rosalia, you will see a small hole. Sun shines through this hole on the floor of the cathedral. Angle of the light changes according to the current position of the Earth in relationship to the sun and points at a particular zodiac sign.<\/p>\n<p>It was the end of March. They play famous music hits while synchronized dancing water and lights welcomes people arriving into the port. Back in the day, its water was considered to have healing powers and people were coming here from far and wide. Unfortunately, the piazza around it is out of repair even though the crumbling walls around still look attractive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_3040.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_3040.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 3040\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sicilian mafia in decline but the street art portraying it is on the rise. This stencil portrait of Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone from The Godfather was created here by a French artist known as C215.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_3042.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_3042.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 3042\" width=\"600\" height=\"778\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>La Piazza Caracciolo in the historic center of Palermo and the heart of Vucciria market. During the day it is filled with vendors. At night, it becomes a hangout for local music artists and dancing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_3044.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_3044.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 3044\" width=\"600\" height=\"696\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That is Via Maccheronai, which is part of Vucciria market on a Sunday night in March. On the right and left, this street is adorned by seating areas of bars and restaurants. As you walk, calls are coming from either side luring you in.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_3047.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_3047.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 3047\" width=\"600\" height=\"713\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The view from our room to the market was much more subdued on a Sunday night than the night before. Another Taglieri di Salumi &amp; Formaggi felt just right. Amazing how the baby of the family in an alien country, all by herself, and she knows where the bus stops, and what bus to take, and where to get off. Also independently. In  library-looking room, there were people of all ages sitting on the chairs lined up amphitheater style.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SETTE MENTA.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SETTE-MENTA.jpeg\" alt=\"SETTE MENTA\" width=\"600\" height=\"522\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When thee meeting was over and the door opened wide to let the smokers out for a break \u2014 yes, the do smoke in Italy more than in the US \u2014 people noticed us and waved us in. With the help of hands and some English, we understood that this was a poetry reading gathering.<\/p>\n<p>We looked around for a bit and moved on towards our Sicilian home.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"THE WORLD.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/THE-WORLD.jpeg\" alt=\"THE WORLD\" width=\"600\" height=\"588\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For me, back then, our walks were an absolute Brown motion wandering through the streets. North? South? Main street? Alley? I was blindly following Tom letting emotions and memories quietly take over. Now, looking back through the pictures, it is interesting to follow our routes on the map.<\/p>\n<p>Italy is so present in Russian literature especially that of the 19th century we studied in school. There is so much Sicily in movies \u2014\u00a0The Godfather, Malena, Cinema Paradiso, The Leopard, Il Postino, L\u2019avventura.<\/p>\n<p>In the 80\u2019s Soviet Union, together with the entire country I was glued to TV following Michele Placido in Damiano Damiani\u2019s La Piovra series about an Italian commissar taking on Sicilian mafia and corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Now memories were falling into real places.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMG_3091.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/juliacore.com\/beyondthebarre\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_3091.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG 3091\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Italian neorealism movement coincided with the younger years of my parents and its message went very much along with the life and mood of the Soviet Union. Visconti, Antonioni, De Sica, Rosselini were very much household names and reached my ears at the age most impressionable.
